Thanks to Ken Christie for these photos taken today on Nevis. They climbed Good Friday Climb, which was complete.

Best weather in UK today

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Great day out today on Aonach Mor and these photos thanks to Spike Sellers and Dave Wilson of Lime Tree. I hope it is not raining too much in England and Wales. Anyone fancy a winter climb on Nevis this next week?

Superb Weather today

Great weather this weekend. Dry and cold and sunny and I’d lay odds that climbing conditions on Nevis could be quite good.

Chris Walker Cycle Challenge

“Live the Dream”

Saturday 4th August 2012

43 or 85 miles Cycle Challenge Around The Stunning Lake District.

www.chriswalkercyclechallenge.com

Chris Walker worked for a number of outdoor companies, including West Coast Mountain Guides. Many of you reading this may have had the pleasure of climbing with him and his mischievous smile. Chris unfortunately fell victim to an avalanche. It was a freak accident and all proper precautions were being followed by Chris at the time. In his memory a trust fund has been set up and each year it donates £500 to both the Association of Mountain Instructors and the British Mountain Guides for further training and continued professional development in Scotland to train and update members in understanding and avoiding avalanche hazard. These same members will pass on the knowledge gained to their guests on snow draped hills and mountains all over the world. The trust also offers grants to global mountain expeditions and Chris was particularly fond of the Himalayas.

This cycle challenge is arranged every year to raise further funds to help with this important work and remember our friend Chris. Please consider turning up and taking part. It’s a fund weekend for a worthy cause.

Cold and showery and snowy

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Still very wintry on Ben Nevis and some ice climbs must be back in shape. Just watch out for avalanche. Thanks to Spike Sellers for the photos taken on the mountain today.

Full winter is back

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

This report from Speyside (Jonathan Preston)……”Went into a waist deep drift when descending the Fiacaill ridge on Friday….   did Fallout Corner in Lochain on Saturday in full winter nick; things like Hooker’s were even more heavily rimed…  did a good little ski tour over to Macdui and back on Sunday — total snow cover on the plateau + more came down overnight and this morning..Same on Nevis and snow down well below 600 metres around Fort William.

Winter lingers

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Over the weekend and all of today the weather has been cold and dry. A mixture of routes were climbed from Good Friday Climb in crampons to Agag’s Groove in rock shoes. As I write this blog a dose of unsettled wintry weather is heading for the Scottish mountains. Some folk were even seen heading towards Point Five Gully on Saturday. Check out Scottish winter in April with Spike for some good photos of what he got up to with Simon and Matt. Well done all three of you. More to follow hopefully.

Cold and Dry

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Thanks to Spike Sellers for these photos showing the current conditions on Ben Nevis. A decent snow cover and ice forming to sea-level this morning. No doubt some of the higher ice routes will be in some sort of condition but just be careful of any avalanche risk. More reports from folk out on the big ridges confirm slow going. Thanks also to Dave Barker and Florence for the photos taken on the South West Ridge of the Douglas boulder today.

Loads of new snow

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Plenty of new snow on the Scottish mountains. One hardy team who are staying at Calluna. climbed Observatory Ridge and did not arrive back until 0600 the following morning, unsurprisingly. The going underfoot will be slow at the moment and the amount of solid snow is limited, however winter will be around for a while longer by the looks of the forecast.
