Curved Ridge

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

It was a wet day on the hill today but we did see the sun if only for a wee while. The freezing level was around the summits. Lots of wet snow about. The Ridge was  in great condition, still loads of snow up there and a good track now too. Thanks Tim.

A wild weekend

Monday, February 24th, 2014

It been a wet and wild weekend here in Scotland, but not all is lost.

We had teams out climbing on Saturday making the most of the weekend. Andy was climbing with Robert and Jonathan, they climbed Curved Ridge. They reported it was good fun, but a tad moist! Scott was out with Bart and Martin, they headed to the SW ridge of the Douglas Boulder on Ben Nevis. Jamie was out in Glen Coe, they headed in to SCNL for some winter skill. On the Sunday all teams wisely all went to the Ice Factor. It was not a day to be on the hill. Plenty of avalanches were reported over the day. This is the thaw  we have been waiting for, it will hopefully settle the Ben down and bring some of the classic route into condition.

I was over on the east climbing with Scott, John, Ian and Chris. They climbed Fiacaill Couloir and Invernookie, both were in very good condition. Next Day we headed round to Lurcher,s with the aim of climbing North Gully. It was very busy, so we settled for one of the grade three gullies to the left of North Gully. Some nice ice climbing in the sun and no wind.

Curved Ridge, Glencoe

Proper wintry on Curved Ridge today and looks like it is staying that way heading towards the weekend. The major gully lines should be firming up nicely again. Thanks Chris for today’s pictures.

Firming up nicely

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Quiet on Curved Ridge, conditions excellent after the warm southern winds turned more from the  west and are dropping in strength, although this week has not been as bad as forecast. Off for a look up the Ben tomorrow with Paul on his final day learning mixed skills ready for summer adventures in the Alps on the many fine ridges there.

Very Dry

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Very dry and warm today in Glen Coe. Quite a few teams out on Centurion and Minus One Buttress also, by all accounts.

Hi Alan

The flower is Dwarf Cornel

They seemed to have just flowered, with the heat and sun no doubt! There are massess of them on the Easians last week Cheers Gary (Tarmachan Mountaineering).

Thanks for that Gary. These were on the descent from Buachaille Etive Mor in Coire na Tulaich.

Dry rock in Glen Coe

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

A very warm and dry day today with plenty of rock climbs from Crowberry Ridge to Grooved Arete and January Jigsaw plus Agag’s Groove to name but a few. No midges where we were either. Tower Ridge by all accounts still has some gnarly old ice left on it so crampons at least might be a good addition to your rucsac for the time being.
